Zambia will receive a 75 million euro ($103 million) loan from the European Investment Bank to rehabilitate and expand Mulonga Water and Sewerage Co.’s water and waste-water services.

The French Development Agency is providing a further loan of 50 million euros for the company, which operates in the country’s Copperbelt Province, according to a statement posted on the EIB’s website.

Most water infrastructure in the area is more than 50 years old, the lender said.

A LEADING financial institution in Kenya has expressed interest in establishing a branch in Zambia.

Zambian High Commissioner to Kenya, Mumbi Phiri told journalists in an interview in Nairobi that, Equity Bank of Kenya would set up a branch in Zambia and create employment opportunities.

If the Zambian people are to get any meaningful benefits from the exploitation of their country's mineral resources, a lot of work needs to be done on strengthening the Ministry of Mines' capacity to regulate mining activities.
As things stand today, it cannot be said that the Ministry of Mines has the organizational capacity to adequately supervise the exploitation of the country's mineral resources and ensure that it is carried out in an efficient, effective, orderly and beneficial manner.

THE Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with six financial institutions to facilitate disbursement of funds and collection of debts for the current loan portfolio on its behalf.

The financial institutions which entered into an agreement with the CEEC include Finance Bank, National Savings and Credit Bank (Natsave), Micro Bankers Trust, Graypages, Cavmont Bank and Investrust Bank.
